Math Academy

As part of our commitment to science and technology learning, Toronto West Academy students are encouraged to participate with the Math Academy program that is offered by the University of Toronto at their downtown Toronto campus. Students will gain knowledge and skills in various aspects of mathematics and will have a chance to meet with members of the University of Toronto Mathematics Department currently involved in mathematics research.
The purpose of this program is to introduce students to an in-depth topic which is not normally covered in the curriculum. Rather than lectures, the program will be run with a heavy “discovery” component, where students do most of their learning by working on carefully selected problems to figure results by themselves. The topic will be creative, fun, and somewhat abstract; in other words, what mathematicians consider “real math”.
GRADE LEVEL: Students in grade 9 to 12.
DATES: March 12 – 16, 2018 (March Break) & August 2018 (dates TBD)
LOCATION: University of Toronto, downtown Toronto campus.
Canada Math Camp

This prestigious program is offered by the Canadian Mathematical Society and is hosted by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto at their downtown Toronto campus. The Canada Math Camp is an invitation only camp offered to students who are top scorers on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) or have had their names put forward by teachers and others in the mathematics community.
The camp is a week-long program where students stay in residence and spend the week participating in intensive math competition preparation along with guest lectures from mathematics faculty.
GRADE LEVEL: Students in grade 8 to 10.
DATES: TBD
LOCATION: University of Toronto, downtown Toronto campus.
